Max Ernst (born April 2nd, 1891 and died April 1, 1976) was a German born painter, a sculptor, a poet and graphic artist. One of the creators of both the Dada Movement and Surrealism, he created a great amount of varied work over the course of his long life.

Ernst began to study art in his late 20s after serving in World War One. A friend of Paul Klee, Marc Chagall and other artists who has escaped from Europe during the Second World War, Klee helped to develop the Abstract Expressionist movement.

His involvement in Surrealism is where most people will recognize his work though Ernst experimented with many different art forms including graphic art, sketching, and of course painting..
